Understanding Your BMI: More Than Just a Number
Your BMI is categorized into different ranges, each indicating a general health status. It’s important to remember that BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. For a complete picture of your health, consult with a healthcare professional.
Underweight
BMI less than 18.5
May indicate insufficient body fat, potentially leading to nutrient deficiencies or weakened immune function.
Normal Weight
BMI 18.5 – 24.9
Generally associated with a lower risk of weight-related health problems.
Overweight
BMI 25.0 – 29.9
May increase the risk of certain health conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Obese
BMI 30.0 or greater
Significantly increases the risk of various serious health complications.

Limitations of BMI
While useful, BMI has limitations:
- Muscle Mass: Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but very little body fat.
- Age and Gender: BMI ranges don’t always perfectly account for differences in body composition due to age or gender.
- Body Fat Distribution: Where fat is stored (e.g., around the waist) can be a greater health risk than overall body fat percentage.
Always consider BMI in conjunction with other health indicators like waist circumference, body fat percentage, and overall lifestyle factors.
